Kathy Fried has been teaching and practicing contemporary shamanism since 1997 and is one of the leading shamanic counsellors in the UK. She runs The Silver Birch Center in London: a holistic counselling and healing practice established in 1992.
This is a shamanic community research project. This open group has two ways for you to take part: Meet for regular gatherings in London or join the world wide research group and take part from wherever you live.
We use shamanic journeying for deep exploration and research. We focus on the big issues of our times. Our intention is to share our findings with the wider community, through the Shamanic Hearts blog, to empower and inspire.

SHAMANISM IN FOCUS
SHAMANIC DRUMMING
Of the many ways of altering ones state of consciousness drumming seems to be the one that has been used most universally. Shamanic drumming is a form of steady monotonous drumming, usually between 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 beats a second. Various experiments have shown that this kind of drumming produces changes in our brain wave frequencies from our normal waking beta frequency to the theta frequency which is that state between sleeping and waking where dream- like images can spontaneously arise. Theta state has also been associated meditation practice and unless some kind of training has taken place it can be difficult to stay conciously aware during this state. The amazing fact is that for most people this altered state of consciousness can be achieved safely and easily within 10-30 minutes of shamanic drumming.
